      <image:title>City Log - Caring for the Everyday Life and Form of the Urban - Cities and urban communities are made up of a multitude of collective resources or ‘‘caring goods ’, also known as ‘urban equalisers’, the prominent ones include- parks, streets, pavements, social infrastructure and housing amongst others. The need for care (or to become caring) in contemporary city-making has by far been used to improve everyday life, but not enough. And in times of crisis, care is a significant precursor to limiting our need for a reactive approach to governance, based on inconsequential developmental policies.</image:title>

      <image:title>City Log - Caring for the Everyday Life and Form of the Urban - Let’s begin by understanding some of the ideals that care advances on, with regards to reaching a state of ‘moral collectivism’. The belief system starts from the individual and loops in communities through a positive ripple effect.</image:title>
      <image:caption>1. To promote common good and shared interests is basic to many societies; to ensure a macrocosmic state of equilibrium and harmony in the everyday, the idea of monitoring simple economics parallel to monitoring human development through a series of indicators must be undertaken. 2. Individual versus communal possessions- the degree of consensus about our essential possessions is striking. People have an array of individual interests, yet the majority of these interests are human- such as to eat, to have shelter, and so forth. The remainders are communal, such as shared interests in a clean environment or daily use of communal facilities like streets, water and electricity supply or urban infrastructure. Now more than ever, these possessions have taken a hit in terms of unequal distribution and accessibility.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5dabf8f1913fa4644cf97cbb/1595131220432-81XYKA6M3QOWKOYS36VQ/IMG-0445.JPG</image:loc>
      <image:title>City Log - Caring for the Everyday Life and Form of the Urban - As much as the dense, community living in urban India is known for its economic opportunities and vitality, it is presented with a fair share of hardships. Quite the contrary is the lifestyle of certain indigenous communities that prove to live conscientiously despite the limited to scarce resources surrounding them. We see glimpses of it in a close-knit village community of Mawlynnong in Meghalaya (Northeast India). The synergy between the residents and ecology of the place is a unique synthesis, for they hold the title of the cleanest village in Asia since 2002 along with fairing high on multiple human development indicators such as women empowerment and securing absolute literacy rate.</image:title>

      <image:title>City Log - On Being Urban</image:title>
      <image:caption>Built and inhabited over multiple centuries, Delhi is a city with almost 20 million citizens with an area of 1,484 square kilometres. Delhi's urban area include the satellite cities of Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurgaon and Noida. It is a rapidly growing urban agglomeration (UA) known as the NCR - National Capital Region. In Delhi, however, no single form of state reform, governance, or public infrastructure can provide a platform for different groups to pursue their aspirations equally. The city is made up of diverse actors, all of which form the local logic through which the city operates.</image:caption>

      <image:title>City Log - On Being Urban</image:title>
      <image:caption>When we deliberate about the future of cities, it is either through the perspective of environmental catastrophes or the role of technology and super-infrastructures, like the Smart Cities Mission (brought in by the National Ruling Party of India in 2014). Both lenses provide a straight-jacket formula for a larger collection of challenges that comprise the city - housing, health, education, employment. Prominent scholars such as Cuthbert (2007) and Verma (2011) have emphasised the need to disentangle studies in the urban realm from the traditional confines of architecture and planning, specifically recommending its reorientation to social science. It is in the breaking away from linear methodologies, that we, as urban practitioners and aware citizens, could corroborate innovative ways of building sustainable cities and resilient communities. <image:title>City Log - On Being Urban - ‘Delhi is an opportunity. Delhi needs no fixing.’</image:title>
      <image:caption>Rather it is the peoples' relationship with the city that needs harnessing, and vice versa. By accepting it has true potential, is a passive way of looking at the city. Therefore, as architects, geographers, community gatekeepers and active citizens, if we proactively redefine imaginations of Delhi by collecting grassroots voices and stirring top-down planning processes, that is, in a way, progress. We are looking at urban complexity in a slightly chaotic way (much to its character) and this is our foremost effort to simplify each layer to the best of our abilities. To break it down in thinkable terms, is to empathize with every factor that plays a part and to build multi-disciplinary perspectives on our built-environment. The gap in action-oriented research is also due to the fact that there is already a wide roster of academic literature on cities, urbanism, geography, planning, governance, culture, et al. but how they are truly impacting common citizenries is a blatant question mark.</image:caption>

      <image:title>City Log - On Being Urban</image:title>
      <image:caption>As urban practitioners born and raised in Delhi, we thought it makes sense to start with a place where we have a sense of belonging. This is not to discount the privileges and backgrounds we come from - it was our relentless intention to not just explore the multiple ‘Dillies’ that exist, but also to knit them through dialogue, activism, and design. It is safe to say that it is curiosity that pushes us to tackle multi-disciplinary issues, and is the motivation to investigate peoples’ relationship with their built environment - kicking off at the neighbourhood level, springboarding to a city level. Via this new endeavour, we look forward to channel and tie the multiple Delhis we have experienced and are yet to experience, of the present, and in memory.</image:caption>

      <image:title>City Log - On Being Urban - Set on democratic principles, City Sabha is an effort to build awareness on people taking charge of planning their spaces to better own their future. This initiative conceptualises the city’s ecosystems, set in the forefront of future planning with burgeoning urbanization and inequality as constant real- time trends. In larger terms, the idea is to not chase problems and find quick- fixes, but to strengthen the aforementioned values and to start by having conversations and building awareness around these subjects and how important they are as reinforcements of our common future.</image:title>

      <image:title>City Log - On Being Urban - The word ‘urban’ is rooted in the networks formed by people. These high-density settlements and infrastructures of the built environment are created through the process of urbanization, which occurs via migration and natural population growth. Population density and urban sprawl are some of the key occurrences, which are defining measures within the scope of urban areas.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Due to national differences in characteristics of urban areas across the globe, there is no universal definition of what consists of ‘urban’ that would be applicable to all countries or, for the most part, even to the countries within a region.</image:caption>

      <image:title>City Log - The Making of Place - In the polis (city-state) of Ancient Greece, the need for public place was realised as early as the 5th century BC, where the agora and Pnyx were the central features of community life. The agora was a collection of temples and government buildings built around a marketplace, usually set at the higher hills of Mediterranian geography. The Pnyx was an amphitheatre, the spatiality of which enabled concentrated citizen-led debate. As ‘urban’ features, the two found relevance not only in their utilitarian purpose, but as common ground for social interaction, debate and the continuous unfolding of democracy.</image:title>

      <image:title>City Log - The Making of Place - In Kiberia, a massive African slum, Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI) has been planning and implementing a series of long-term projects which connect local assets with existing resources and set up financial, management and leadership systems to empower residents with lasting control. By providing water facilities, institutional infrastructure and reducing flood risks, these projects have positively transformed community places in Kiberia[8].</image:title>

      <image:title>City Log - The Making of Place - This idyllic form has been severely challenged in the modern era, as cities grew exponentially in population, size and number. In 1950, there were only two megacities[10] - New York and Tokyo. By 2025, there are set to be more than thirty[2]. The challenges of designing modern cities lie equally in providing quality roads, sanitation, transportation, electricity, housing and economic opportunity, as in the manner in which these services are designed – both in relation to one another and the human users that seek them.</image:title>

      <image:title>City Log - The Making of Place - “The trust of a city street is formed over time from many, many little public sidewalk contacts. It grows out of people stopping by the bar for a beer, getting advice from the grocer and giving advice to the newsstand man… The sum of such casual, public contact at a local level— most of it fortuitous, most of it associated with errands, all of it metered by the person concerned and not thrust upon him by anyone — is a feeling for the public identity of people, a web of public respect and trust, and a resource in time of personal or neighborhood need.”</image:title>

      <image:title>City Log - The Making of Place - For instance, the non-profit Sports Backers’ launched five ‘Jump-Rope Stations’ across the city of Richmond, Virginia. Placed at bus stops and stations, these chest-high pedestals have a jump-rope attached to them which can be used by citizens walking or waiting in the vicinity. Although such an intervention has a small spatial footprint, its impact lies in its method of engaging citizens – it takes ‘play’ in the city from the playground to the streets, and demonstrates the potential of a small object in creating its own place[7].</image:title>

      <image:title>City Log - The Making of Place - While economic growth and efficiency are undeniable pillars of development, a city, at its fundamental core, is comprised of living, breathing, thinking, and feeling people - people who are programmed to seek and form social connections. The social networks of a city are what last in times of need and difficulty. They contribute to building resilience by strengthening cultures and ties. By the 1950s and 1960s, Western urbanists began turning to alternative solutions for cities, ones that placed human interaction as primary. William H. Whyte, a sociologist and urbanist, recorded observations of people’s behaviour in public parks, plazas and other urban environments. Armed with a notebook, camera and research assistants, his work brought quotidian observations to the fore, which triggered thought and action on urban public space[5]. In 1958, Whyte recruited a young journalist for his written work on cities, who went on to write a seminal book on urban planning and design, ‘The Death and Life of Great American Cities.’ This was none other than Jane Jacobs, whose contribution to urbanism is popularly known. On observing life unfold on the streets and sidewalks, she saw the city as a collection of diverse systems, where individual local characteristics were all interconnected. She propagated the role of higher densities, shorter neighbourhood blocks, local economies and mixed uses, as instrumental in developing a lasting character[6].</image:title>

      <image:title>Places for Khikee - Currently, Satpula has been adopted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to carry out restoration work aiming to conserve, by highlighting its structural elegance and enhancing its environmental aesthetics. The associated 40-acre park is controlled by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).. While there is some collection of water during the monsoon, the lake primarily acts as a cricket ground for local children for the rest of the year.. This large green area serves as the lungs for three neighbourhood communities of South Delhi, namely, Khirkee Extension, Sheikh Serai and Chirag Dilli. Satpula co-exists in the midst of historical monuments, residences, offices, cafes and street-art murals. From the perspective of urbanism, it is an amalgamation of many different user-groups and cultures. Historically, socially and geographically significant, Satpula Park has the potential to attract people from across the city, serving diverse residents with its multiple functions.</image:title>

      <image:title>Context - Delhi is classified as a megacity, with over 18 million citizens. A host of quantitative and qualitative research has demonstrated that the city remains hostile in its considerations to accessibility, inclusivity, safety, usability and sustainability. As signatories to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we are far from the targets prescribed by the Sustainable Development Goals (see below).</image:title>
      <image:caption>While Delhi has experienced citizen-led movements such as Raahgiri (where the streets are temporarily taken over by pedestrians engaging in fitness activity) and witnessed the role of public art in revitalising urban-scapes in the Lodhi Art District, the concept of inclusive ‘placemaking’ remains a niche activity. Our vision is of a world where citizens’ right to the city is recognised and realised. Any transformation of space (for inclusivity, safety, economic vitality, or more) requires collective action. We aim to collect these voices through participative dialogue, and develop innovative placemaking strategies to enable quality public places in the city. <image:caption>We surveyed 66 people from CR Park and other neighbourhoods of Delhi NCR to understand how people occupy, relate to, and want to see in their city’s public spaces. This gave us an important starting point, in order to: Create a framework to guage the quality of public space Combine different public space typologies Identify strategies and measures to positively impact the neighbourhood and community</image:caption>

      <image:title>Weekly Markets - 200 female vendors travelling from Sunder Nagar, Raghubir Nagar and Geeta Colony have been setting up shop on the assigned spot since 2009 with the assistance of SEWA and the NDMC. Due to Covid-19, mobility from their homes to the Sunday market has been nothing but challenging. With barely any consumers out on the streets, their weekly business has taken a hard hit for the past 8 months. These female vendors feel defeated, given the drastic shortfall of demand.</image:title>

      <image:title>Weekly Markets - The Mangal Bazaar (Tuesday market) site in Dilshad Garden has allowed vendors to sell on a rotational basis to follow safety norms and social distancing as much as possible. There was a time when this weekly market was prohibited to set up shop due to the market site being within 500m of a containment zone. Given the circumstances, there has been a loss of livelihood and regular source of income of 705 weekly street vendors due to the Covid-19 pandemic.</image:title>

      <image:title>Weekly Markets - The second weekly market site in Shahdara district of East Delhi Zone is situated in Jhilmil Colony, which is in close proximity to the previous Dilshad Garden weekly market. Due to its proximity, the vendors move from one market to the next on a day-to-day basis. Held in a maidan (open field), Som Bazaar (Monday Market) was not allowed to be opened for up to 9 months of harsh lockdowns, where the vendors suffered losses and the residents of Jhilmil Colony dealt with commuting to far off places for basic household essentials. This multipurpose maidan caters to it’s surrounding neighbourhoods through its multiple usages- from a playground and parking lot to a vibrant market place, it has been a place for everyone!</image:title>
